Wellington Scrap Metal Invests In Innovative Recycling Equipment

Leading New Zealand based Metal Recycling Company; Wellington Scrap Metals has recently taken delivery of an innovative package of machinery to assist with its growing recycling and demolition operations.

Managing Director Brett Hall began his search 3 years ago for the right machinery for their business. Previously WSM has operated conventional – modified excavators in this tough and extreme working environment. Excavators are commonly known as a “digga”

With the high duty cycles that are built into metal recycling business, WSM decided that it was time to change that mentally.

Diggers are designed to dig… they no longer met the criteria associated with their business philosophy. “It’s not that they were not good machines, but were not meeting our productivity numbers,” said Hall. WSM determined that a purpose built materials handling machine was required to improve productivity.

WSM also felt that it was time to find a machine with a cabin that offered something extra for their operators to work safely whilst also providing extra productivity.

It was then that WSM invested in their first Sennebogen Materials Handler, a wheeled Sennebogen 821M, fitted as standard with an Elevating Operator Cabin.

The hydraulic elevating cabin provides the operator with an eye level working height of 5.5m..This dramatically increases productivity and safety on site. Productivity is increased by the operator having a bird’s eye view of the task at hand, be it processing steel or loading a truck.

Safety increased by the same feature by drastically reducing blind spots and providing the operator a clear view of other workers and traffic in the area. This feature cannot be underestimated where everyone is trying to complete their work as fast but as safe as possible.

WSM were extremely impressed with the Sennebogen’s productivity, ease of serviceability and overall running costs and decided it was time to extend the capabilities of a materials handler and research the viability of fitting a mobile shear, extending the productivity and safety aspects to working on demolition sites.

Working with the Sennebogen dealer, Pacific Materials Handling they discovered that this combination is becoming popular globally and came up with the impressive combination of a tracked Sennebogen 821R Materials Handling Machine fitted with a heavy duty Genesis GXP300 Mobile Shear.

This powerful combination has already proved worthy for Wellington Scrap Metals, having worked the machinery at a recent demolition site. The tracked version allows the Sennebogen to go anywhere that a conventional excavator would go, but retain all the benefits of being a purpose built materials handler.

The feedback from the work site was very positive, where all were very impressed with the Sennebogen’s safety, speed, precision, reach and especially they hydraulic elevating operator’s cab.

When fitted with the Genesis GXP300 shear the Sennebogen – Genesis is a very fast, efficient, safe and powerful machine with 880 tons of shear force available on this relatively small machine.

This German built machine is a purpose built materials handling machine [Not to be confused with a modified excavator] and is fitted with many innovations.

The Sennebogen 821 is fitted with materials handling boom with reach of up to 11 metres on this 22t machine.

One of the other features of the Sennebogen is that it retains its capacity throughout the full 360 degree swing radius. This is different to an “excavator/digger” where the capacity reduces by up to 50% when the machine is working out to either side.

The Heavy Duty Genesis GXP300 Shear is used to process heavy metal into a more easily handled size. This shear weighs just on 3500kgs and provides 880 tons of shear.

The fully enclosed Weldox steel structure not only protects the hydraulic cylinder from damage but also provides extra strength and rigidity for the structure. This is vitally important for equipment used in the Recycling & Demolition industry.

All Genesis shears are fitted with four way indexable blades that are built with extra height, a unique and patented bolt on piercing tip and an offset jaw apex that optimises the shears power.

This impressive package will be on display at the upcoming SMRANZ annual conference, this year at Lake Taupo in July.

There are now over 90 Sennebogen purpose built material handling machines supplied by their local distributor for New Zealand & Australian Pacific Materials Handling.

Sennebogen machines are available in sizes from 19,000kgs through to massive 270,000kgs in WHEELED or TRACK versions, in DIESEL or ELECTRICE powered form.

The Genesis GXP range of shears is available with shear forces from 600 to over 3300tons of shear force, in rotating or non-rotating versions.
